The Committee 2009/10

So here we are. Your life is in our hands! Familarise yourself with our roles and faces and don't forget to say hello if you see us out and about. We will be organising everything from social, charity and sports events to helping peers. Our aim is to help YOU have a better university experience.

LMSS President ~ Ian "smudge" Smith

Hello my name is Ian, but more or less anyone I know calls me Smudge.

I can not tell you how much I am looking forward to being your new president of the oldest and best student society of the country: The Liverpool Medical Students Society (LMSS). As I have said before, the LMSS will be the central hub of all your social, welfare, academic and sporting needs throughout your time in medical school.

During the coming year, I pledge to you this:

• I will put the upmost effort into everything I do for the society.
• I will try my hardest to please the vast majority of people in times when pleasing everyone is impossible.
• I will listen, and take seriously any comments and criticisms that are presented to me and act upon them in a way that I see fit to benefit and protect the interests of the society members.

We will representative you when you need us, through the BMA, faculty, academic, welfare and year representatives.
The LMSS has served me (and every medic I know) through the good and bad times at medical school. Sign up to the society today!

Don’t be shy
Smudge

p.s. if you have any questions/comments/suggestions at all please email me (and it will not get ignored) : president@lmssonline.co.uk or call me on 07737 982 919 (first years: there’s no such thing as a stupid question)

LMSS Treasurer ~ Simon Fairweather

Howdy ho! I'm Simon, the treasurer for the year. My job is to oversee all the bank accounts and make sure we don't end up in court for unpaid debts. In order for that to happen I'll be needing your support in the way of membership, a one off payment for constant discounts on every single thing we offer. Some of this will go towards all the sports teams to help them grow and prosper and also fund fantastic events such as the annual artefacts play. If you need any more information give me a shout on treasurer@lmssonline.co.uk

LMSS Secretary ~ Karolina Griffths

Dear Medical Students,

LMSS is at the heart of all the social, academic, sporting and talent filled activities of Liverpool Medical School. It is a fantastic society that not only supports all the medical students, but manages to raises thousands for charities each year as well as putting on some of the best events of the social calendar!
We have a brilliant committee full of enthusiastic people – do not hesitate to contact anyone for any information.
As Secretary of LMSS I am involved with planning the calendar, coordinating meetings and ensuring things run well. Whether you are new to the medical school, or already a student please have a look at what we have to offer.

Looking forward to hearing from you! Any questions please feel free to email me.

LMSS Academic Rep ~ Rachel McEnaney

I'm Rachel McEnaney and the LMSS Academic Representative for 2010-2011. Im a 5th year, and been through the mill of Liverpool Medical School, so I am hoping I can help lower years out by organising extra lectures and workshops that can help supplement your learning. These extras will include some SSM drop ins and PP lectures for 1st years, speciality lectures to help both 3rd years starting their paeds and obs&gynae placements and revision for 4th years. The well established Professor Wardle evenings and Case Presentations (open to all years and can really help to develop your presentation skills-with prizes to the winners!) will be some of the highlights, and In the 2nd term LOCAS teaching for 4th years from 5th years and junior doctors will help as revision sessions. 5th years will not be left out--I am hoping to get a few sessions with F1's/F2's to help us prepare our portfolios and start our first jobs.

My role also includes liaising with Faculty, chairing meetings feeding back about our clinical placements and also being involved as a student rep at many workstreams that include curriculum changes, student welfare and portfolio creation. I really want to represent us as best I can, which I can only do if I receive feedback from as many students as possible. Please feel free to contact me with your positive thoughts and any criticisms about the running of our course, or your year reps. This is vital to make any changes-I will always do my best to get our voices heard.

Keep an eye out on your emails, Ill be staying in close contact about all the upcoming events next year!

ASS Rep ~ Laura Wark

Hi, I’m Laura, a fifth year and your Associated Societies Rep for the coming year. The LMSS is linked with several other medically related societies which help you to supplement your learning, follow your medical interests and enhance your CV. From evening lectures organised by Surgical Scousers or Physicians’ Society, to teaching Basic Life Support or Sex Ed in schools, there’s loads to get involved with. I’m here to point you in the right direction, provide help and support to those running these groups and advise you, should you wish to set up a society for your own.

Get in touch with anything Associated Societies related!

Business Rep ~ Bahij Hakim

My name is Bahij and I am delighted to be your business representative this year. The LMSS supports its members in so many ways, my job is making sure that people have access to many of the essential items needed to get through medical school from stethoscopes to gloves for HARC and Hoodies. We will also ensure competitive prices as we are aware student loans only stretch so far. You can order off the website any time by simply going on our online shop, its simple to order and I am always contactable if you have any questions at business@lmssonline.co.uk.
